Mega Houndoom ex Deck Guide Pokémon TCG Pocket

Hola Everyone! It’s your boy Anketsu here, and welcome to a brand new Pokémon TCG Pocket Deck guide.

240 damage from a single attack. The catch? You have to flip three coins.

Mega Houndoom ex is one of the most unusual Fire decks in Pokémon TCG Pocket, combining explosive damage with an inherently risky coin-flip mechanic.

With the right support, however, that randomness becomes much easier to manage. Victini can give you another chance at your flips, while Fire-type Energy acceleration helps Houndoom attack surprisingly early.

It is not a top-tier meta deck, but its huge damage ceiling makes it a genuinely fun and competitive option capable of reaching Master Ball rank.

Now grab a seat, relax, and enjoy the guide!

Mega Houndoom ex 🔥

Mega Houndoom ex is one of the most interesting promo cards released during the Ruler of the Skies season. While most promo cards are usually more fun to collect than to build a competitive deck around, Mega Houndoom ex is one of those rare exceptions that is actually worth experimenting with.

It is not a broken card, and it is certainly not a top-tier meta threat. However, its incredibly high damage ceiling, combined with the growing strength of Fire-type support, gives Mega Houndoom ex enough tools to become a genuinely playable deck.

How to Get Mega Houndoom ex

Mega Houndoom ex will be available from August 12 through August 29 as part of the Promo Pack B Series Vol. 11 event.

The promo pack can also contain two alternate-art cards featuring Noivern and Pikachu from Ruler of the Skies, as well as two cards with new effects: Carvanha, which can be used to support Mega Sharpedo ex, and a new Skitty.

If you are interested in Mega Houndoom ex, it is worth picking up the promo during the event. Even if the deck never becomes a major part of the meta, the card has enough unique mechanics and damage potential to make it a worthwhile addition to your collection.

Mega Houndoom ex Card Analysis

Mega Houndoom ex is a Stage 1 Fire type Pokémon with 190 HP. It has a Water Weakness of +20 damage and a Retreat Cost of 2.

Its only attack is Grimhound Flare, which costs 2 Fire Energy and 1 Colorless Energy:

Flip 3 coins. This attack does 80 damage for each heads.

At first glance, the attack looks extremely inconsistent. Its damage can range from just 0 to 240, depending entirely on the result of three coin flips.

That randomness is obviously the biggest drawback of Mega Houndoom ex, but it is also what gives the card its appeal. Three heads result in an enormous 240 damage, which is enough to immediately knock out many of the strongest Pokémon in the game.

The problem is that you should not build your strategy around hitting three heads. In most games, you will get either one or two heads, meaning Mega Houndoom ex will usually deal 80 or 160 damage. There is also a 12.5% chance of flipping three tails and dealing 0 damage.

Understanding this variance is essential when building and playing the deck.

How Consistent Is Mega Houndoom ex?

The three coin flips have the following outcomes:

Coin Flip ResultProbabilityDamage
3 Tails12.5%0
1 Head + 2 Tails37.5%80
2 Heads + 1 Tail37.5%160
3 Heads12.5%240

The important number is the chance of dealing at least 160 damage: 50%.

In other words, half of your attacks will deal 160 or 240 damage. The other half will deal either 80 damage or nothing.

This makes Mega Houndoom ex inherently unreliable, but the situation becomes much more interesting once its Fire type support cards are taken into account.

The Fire Support That Makes Mega Houndoom ex Playable

Mega Houndoom ex would be much harder to justify without the current Fire support available in Pokémon TCG Pocket.

Flame Patch and Rainbow Cave are particularly important because they allow you to discard Fire Energy and then put it back into play, significantly accelerating Houndoom’s setup.

This can reduce the amount of time required to get Mega Houndoom ex ready to attack, sometimes allowing you to get your main attacker online one or even two turns earlier than you normally could.

However, the most important partner is Victini from Pulsing Aura.

Victini’s ability allows you to retry all the coin flips made by one of your Fire type Pokémon. This is exactly what Mega Houndoom ex needs.

If you flip three tails, Victini gives you another chance to find damage. If you hit only one head for 80 damage but need more to score a knockout, you can try again. Even when your first result is already good, having a second opportunity can dramatically improve the reliability of Grimhound Flare.

For this reason, Victini is essentially mandatory in most Mega Houndoom ex builds. Without it, the deck’s central mechanic becomes significantly more unreliable and the strategy becomes much harder to justify competitively.

Other Pokémon and Trainer cards can also improve the deck’s consistency, survivability, and overall game plan. We will examine the best partners and support cards in detail in the dedicated sections below.

Mega Houndoom ex Deck Strategy

The basic strategy is straightforward: Mega Houndoom ex is your main attacker, and the goal is to get it into play and powered up as quickly as possible.

Flame Patch and the other Fire Energy acceleration tools are particularly valuable in the early game, allowing you to reduce the time needed to prepare your three Energy attack. Once Mega Houndoom ex is ready, you want to start attacking as soon as possible.

If you have the opportunity to evolve into Mega Houndoom ex and move it into the Active Spot, doing so early is often the correct play. The more attacks you make, the more opportunities you have to roll high damage, especially when Victini gives you a second chance at unfavorable results.

The deck is therefore not simply trying to hit a lucky 240 damage attack. Instead, it wants to create enough opportunities to attack that the coin flip mechanic becomes more manageable over the course of the game.

And when the flips do go your way, Mega Houndoom ex can produce some spectacular knockouts.

A lucky 240 damage Grimhound Flare can immediately remove powerful Pokémon such as Miraidon ex, Mega Sableye ex, Mega Rayquaza ex, and many other high HP threats from the board.

That is ultimately what makes the deck appealing: the damage output is unreliable, but the ceiling is high enough to reward aggressive play.

Mega Houndoom ex Strengths and Weaknesses

Mega Houndoom ex’s biggest strength is also its biggest weakness: variance.

When the deck can consistently accelerate its Energy and access Victini, Houndoom can attack early and threaten extremely high damage. Its 240 damage ceiling means that even some of the largest Pokémon in the current meta can potentially be knocked out in a single attack.

However, the deck becomes much less threatening when it cannot establish its Energy acceleration or find Victini.

If you fail to accelerate your Energy, Mega Houndoom ex can simply be too slow. And without Victini, a bad coin flip sequence can leave you dealing 0 or 80 damage at exactly the wrong moment.

This makes Houndoom particularly vulnerable to decks that can remain on the Bench while steadily building their own threats. Mega Metagross ex, Mega Diancie ex, and Puppy Pile can all create difficult games because they can accumulate damage and eventually reach the threshold required to score a one hit knockout on Mega Houndoom ex.

Its Water Weakness also creates obvious problems against Water type attackers. Decks featuring Wailord ex or Milotic ex, for example, can put significant pressure on Houndoom and punish its relatively modest 190 HP.

Fortunately, Elegant Cape from Everyday Wonders provides an important defensive option. The Tool increases Mega Houndoom ex’s HP by 30, bringing it up to a much more respectable 220 HP and helping it survive against some of the attacks that would otherwise knock it out.

Overall, Mega Houndoom ex is not a top tier meta deck, but that does not mean it is unplayable. With the right support and a good understanding of its matchups, it is absolutely capable of reaching Master Ball rank.

The deck rewards players who understand how to manage its variance, maximize their Energy acceleration, and choose the right moments to commit Mega Houndoom ex to the Active Spot. It may not be the most consistent Fire deck available, but few things are more satisfying than turning a favorable coin flip into a 240 damage knockout.

Other Pokémon for Mega Houndoom ex 🧨

Entei ex

The Support Pokémon listed below are not mandatory inclusions for every build. They are simply different options that can be mixed, swapped, or adjusted depending on your preferred strategy, playstyle, and the cards you currently have available.

The Pokémon you pair with Mega Houndoom ex can be divided into two main categories: Energy acceleration and consistency support.

The first group helps Mega Houndoom ex reach the three Energy required for Grimhound Flare as quickly as possible, while the second improves the reliability of its coin flips, card draw, or overall game plan.

There is no single mandatory combination outside of Victini in most builds, so this is also one of the areas where you can customize the deck according to your preferred playstyle.

Moltres ex

Moltres ex from Genetic Apex remains one of the most reliable Energy acceleration options for Fire decks, despite being one of the oldest cards available in Pokémon TCG Pocket.

Its ability to generate Fire Energy makes it an excellent early-game partner for Mega Houndoom ex. The basic plan is simple: use Moltres ex to build Energy on your Bench while preparing Houndoom, then bring your Mega Evolution into the Active Spot once it is ready to attack.

Moltres ex is generally the safest choice if your priority is consistent Energy acceleration.

Magby

Magby offers a different approach to Energy acceleration. As a Baby Pokémon, it can start contributing to your setup from the first turn, giving Mega Houndoom ex an opportunity to reach its three-Energy requirement faster.

It is less powerful as a standalone attacker than Moltres ex, but its low commitment makes it an interesting option for players who want to keep the deck focused almost entirely on Houndoom.

Magby is particularly appealing in faster builds where every turn of Energy acceleration matters.

Hearthflame Mask Ogerpon

Hearthflame Mask Ogerpon is a more unconventional option that can also help accelerate Fire Energy, although its strategy introduces another layer of coin-flip dependency.

This can technically work very well with Victini, since Victini gives you another opportunity to retry unfavorable coin flips. The problem is that combining Ogerpon, Houndoom, and Victini creates a deck that relies on several different coin-flip mechanics.

While the ceiling can be interesting, the additional cards and randomness can ultimately make the deck less consistent. It is therefore better suited to players who enjoy experimenting with high-variance builds rather than those looking for the most reliable version of Mega Houndoom ex.

Victini

If there is one Pokémon that should be considered essential for Mega Houndoom ex, it is Victini.

Its ability to retry the coin flips of a Fire type Pokémon directly addresses Houndoom’s biggest weakness. A bad Grimhound Flare result can become another opportunity to deal meaningful damage, while a mediocre 80 damage attack can potentially be turned into a much stronger hit.

Victini is not just a good partner for Houndoom; it is one of the most effective ways to make coin flip based Fire decks playable in the first place.

For that reason, Victini is the first Pokémon I would add to almost every Mega Houndoom ex decklist.

Entei ex

Entei ex provides a completely different type of support. Similar to how Suicune ex functions in some Water decks, Entei ex can act as both a draw engine and a secondary attacker.

This makes it particularly useful during the early game, when you are still preparing Mega Houndoom ex. Instead of relying entirely on Houndoom being ready immediately, Entei ex can help maintain pressure while also improving your access to the cards needed to complete your setup.

It is therefore a strong option for more balanced builds that want Mega Houndoom ex to remain the main win condition without making the entire deck dependent on it from the first turn.

Which Pokémon Should You Choose?

The Fire type pool gives Mega Houndoom ex a surprising amount of flexibility.

If you want to accelerate Energy as consistently as possible, Moltres ex is the most natural choice. Magby is an interesting alternative for faster, more focused builds, while Hearthflame Mask Ogerpon is a higher variance option that can create explosive turns when combined with Victini.

For improving Houndoom’s overall consistency, Victini is by far the most important partner, while Entei ex provides additional draw power and a reliable secondary attacker.

The exact combination ultimately depends on how you want to play the deck. Mega Houndoom ex already introduces plenty of variance through its attack, so more consistent builds will generally benefit from prioritizing reliable Energy acceleration and Victini over stacking too many additional coin flip mechanics.

Best Support Partners

  • Moltres ex, Magby & Hearthflame Mask Ogerpon Energy Acceleration: Speed up Fire Energy setup and get Mega Houndoom ex ready to attack faster.
  • Entei ex Damage & Utility: Provides early-game pressure, additional damage, and useful draw power while Houndoom is being prepared.
  • Victini Coin-Flip Consistency: Gives Mega Houndoom ex another chance to retry its coin flips, making its damage output much more reliable.

Best Trainer Cards for Mega Houndoom ex 💡

carta strumento distintivo fiamma pokemon pocket
Flame Patch

Just like the Pokémon section, these Trainer cards are not all meant to be played together. They are simply useful options that can work inside different versions of the deck.

The Trainer lineup for Mega Houndoom ex is built around three main goals: consistency, Energy acceleration, and survivability.

As with almost every competitive Pokémon TCG Pocket deck, some staples are practically non-negotiable.

Poké Ball, Professor’s Research, Copycat, and Cyrus remain essential for finding your Pokémon, maintaining card advantage, and controlling the opponent’s board. These are cards you should expect to play in virtually every Mega Houndoom ex build.

The more interesting choices are the cards specifically designed to support Houndoom’s Energy requirements and help it survive long enough to make the most of its high damage potential.

Flame Patch

Flame Patch is one of the most important Trainer cards for Mega Houndoom ex.

The Item allows you to recover a Fire Energy from the discard pile and put it back into play, giving the deck an additional way to accelerate its Energy setup.

This is particularly valuable for Houndoom because Grimhound Flare requires three Energy. Getting those three Energy into play as quickly as possible can make the difference between attacking on time and losing several turns while preparing your Mega Evolution.

Flame Patch becomes even more effective when combined with Rainbow Cave, creating one of the deck’s most important Energy acceleration engines.

Rainbow Cave

Rainbow Cave, introduced in Ruler of the Skies, is the ideal partner for Flame Patch.

The Stadium allows you to discard Energy yourself, which may initially seem counterproductive. For Mega Houndoom ex, however, putting Fire Energy into the discard pile is exactly what you want.

Once the Energy is discarded, Flame Patch can recover it and accelerate your setup.

This creates a simple but effective combination: Rainbow Cave fills the discard pile with Fire Energy, while Flame Patch brings that Energy back into play.

Together, they can significantly reduce the time needed to prepare Mega Houndoom ex for its first attack.

Elegant Cape

Mega Houndoom ex has only 190 HP, which can leave it vulnerable to being knocked out before it gets enough opportunities to use Grimhound Flare.

Elegant Cape from Everyday Wonders helps solve this problem by increasing Houndoom’s HP by 30, bringing it up to 220 HP.

The additional durability is particularly useful against decks that would otherwise be able to reach a one-hit knockout on the base 190 HP.

Elegant Cape is therefore one of the best defensive options for Houndoom, especially when you expect to face powerful attackers or unfavorable matchups.

Healing Options

If increasing Houndoom’s maximum HP is not enough, you can also use healing cards to extend its time in play.

Lucky Ice Pop and Pokémon Center Lady can both help remove damage from Mega Houndoom ex, giving your main attacker additional opportunities to use Grimhound Flare.

This fits particularly well with the deck’s game plan: Houndoom does not necessarily need to win the game with a single attack.

The more attacks you can make, the more opportunities you have to find favorable coin flips and eventually land the high-damage hits the deck is built around.

Alternative Trainers

If you do not want to use Rainbow Cave or Elegant Cape, there are a few alternatives worth considering.

Hiking Trail can replace Rainbow Cave when you want a different Stadium option, while Giant Cape provides another way to increase Houndoom’s survivability.

These alternatives are not necessarily stronger than the main options, but they can fit different decklists and playstyles depending on the rest of your Pokémon lineup.

Overall, the core Trainer package should remain focused on consistency and Energy acceleration.

Flame Patch + Rainbow Cave is particularly important for getting Mega Houndoom ex ready to attack quickly, while Elegant Cape and healing cards help ensure that your main attacker survives long enough to take advantage of its enormous damage ceiling.

Mega Houndoom ex Strengths

  • Huge Damage Ceiling: Can deal up to 240 damage with one attack.
  • Strong Fire Support: Flame Patch and Victini improve its consistency.
  • Early Pressure: Can attack quickly with proper Energy acceleration.

Mega Houndoom ex Weaknesses

  • High RNG: Damage depends entirely on three coin flips.
  • Energy Hungry: Needs 3 Energy to attack without acceleration.
  • Water Weakness: Struggles against powerful Water-type attackers.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Mega Houndoom ex is all about embracing the coin flip. With Victini and Fire Energy acceleration, you can turn an inherently risky attack into a surprisingly threatening strategy, with the potential to reach 240 damage and score huge knockouts. It may not be a top-tier deck, but it is definitely one of the more unique Fire builds you can play right now.

But what do you think? Is the coin-flip mechanic still interesting, or has it become outdated in a fast-paced Pokémon TCG Pocket meta? And would you rather play a high-risk deck like Houndoom or choose a more consistent Fire strategy?
