Pokémon Cards

Wailord ex 🐋

At first glance, Wailord ex doesn’t look like a typical meta attacker.
As a Stage 1 Water-type Pokémon evolving from Wailmer, it has an incredible 250 HP, even higher than several Mega Evolution Pokémon such as Mega Rayquaza ex, Mega Metagross ex, and Mega Sableye ex.

It has an Electric Weakness (+20), a hefty Retreat Cost of four, and its attack, Wondrous Waves, costs four Water Energy, deals 100 damage, and removes all Special Conditions from Wailord ex.

Just like in the Pokémon video games, Wailord’s defining characteristic is its enormous size. Pokémon TCG Pocket translates that into one of the highest HP totals in the game, making it one of the hardest Pokémon to Knock Out.

It won’t overwhelm opponents with raw damage instead, it slowly outlasts them through incredible durability.

Wailord ex Strategy

Wailord ex is best played as a stall-oriented tank deck. Your goal isn’t to take quick Prize Points, but to survive long enough for your opponent to run out of ways to deal meaningful damage.

The ideal opening is Wailmer, Wailord ex, Indeedee ex, and at least one healing card already in hand. Wailmer absorbs the early attacks while you attach Water Energy every turn before evolving into Wailord ex as soon as possible.

Once you reach four Energy, you simply keep attacking with the same Wailord ex for the rest of the game.

Because of its enormous Retreat Cost, you should almost never switch it out. A common mistake is trying to preserve Wailord ex by retreating it when its HP gets low. In most games, committing to a single Wailord ex is the correct play, as the deck is designed to outheal incoming damage rather than rotate attackers.

Since Wailord ex is a regular Pokémon ex rather than a Mega Evolution, your opponent still needs to defeat two copies to win, making every healing card significantly more valuable.

The deck’s core revolves around healing and damage reduction. Indeedee ex provides constant healing through its Ability, and because Wailord ex usually remains in the Active Spot for the entire game, that passive healing generates value every single turn instead of being wasted on rotating attackers.

Alongside Pokémon Center Lady, Irida, Lucky Ice Pop, Soothing Shore, and Heavy Helmet, Wailord ex becomes incredibly difficult to Knock Out. In many games you’ll heal between 60 and well over 100 HP every turn, creating situations where your opponent simply can’t deal damage faster than you recover it.

Matchups and Counters

One of Wailord ex’s biggest strengths is its excellent matchup against Special Condition decks. Since Wondrous Waves removes every Special Condition after attacking, strategies built around Sleep, Burn, or Poison lose much of their effectiveness.

This makes Wailord ex particularly strong against decks like Milotic ex, Igglybuff/Darkrai, Mega Blaziken ex, Mega Sceptile ex, and Mega Venusaur ex.

Its biggest weakness is speed. Requiring four Water Energy means Wailord ex needs time before it can take control of a game, and Wailmer is much easier to Knock Out during the early turns.

Fast aggressive decks such as Mega Lucario ex, Miraidon ex, Dedenne ex, and Puppy Pile can often overwhelm you before your setup is complete.

Electric decks are especially threatening because of Wailord ex’s Weakness, and Bounded Field is arguably its strongest counter.

By doubling Weakness damage, the Stadium allows Electric attackers to reach knockout numbers that even Wailord ex’s massive HP and healing engine struggle to survive.

If you enjoy defensive, grindy strategies, Wailord ex is absolutely worth building. It may not be the fastest deck in the format, but once fully set up, very few decks can match its ability to outlast opponents through relentless healing and unmatched durability.

What About Oricorio?

You’re probably wondering, “But Anketsu… what about Oricorio?!” If you’re playing the Indeedee ex version, you can’t Knock Out Oricorio but it can’t Knock Out Wailord ex either.

Between your massive HP and constant healing, the matchup usually ends in a 30-turn draw, with neither player able to break the stalemate.

The only real problem is Oricorio paired with Miraidon ex. Oricorio stalls your Wailord ex while your opponent powers up Miraidon ex on the Bench. Once it’s fully charged, Miraidon ex can deal 300 damage in a single attack, giving you an almost unwinnable matchup.

Other Pokémon 🌀

The Support Pokémon listed below are not mandatory inclusions for every build. They are simply different options that can be mixed, swapped, or adjusted depending on your preferred strategy, playstyle, and the cards you currently have available.

Without a doubt, Indeedee ex is Wailord ex’s best partner. In fact, you’ll rarely want to promote it to the Active Spot unless you’re forced to start the game with it.

Its role is simple: stay safely on the Bench and continuously heal your Active Wailmer or Wailord ex through its Ability. Running two copies doubles the passive healing from 20 to 40 HP every turn, making Wailord ex incredibly difficult to wear down over the course of a long game.

Passive healing is exactly what Wailord ex wants. Unlike one time recovery cards, Indeedee ex provides value every single turn without consuming additional resources.

If future expansions introduce more Pokémon with repeatable healing Abilities, they’ll almost certainly become strong candidates for future versions of this deck.

If you’d rather speed up Wailord ex’s setup, several Water Pokémon are worth considering. Milotic ex, Baxcalibur, Mantyke and Mega Sharpedo ex all help accelerate Water Energy, allowing Wailord ex to reach its fourEnergy attack much sooner.

These partners trade some long term durability for a faster and more explosive game plan, making them excellent alternatives if the meta becomes too aggressive.

Finally, Suicune ex is another interesting tech option. If you find the deck a little too slow or inconsistent, Suicune ex provides additional card draw to help you find your evolution pieces, healing cards, and Energy more reliably during the early turns.

It won’t directly improve Wailord ex’s survivability, but the extra consistency can make the entire deck feel much smoother to play.

Trainer Cards 💡

Just like the Pokémon section, these Trainer cards are not all meant to be played together. They are simply useful options that can work inside different versions of the deck.

Like almost every competitive deck in Pokémon TCG Pocket, Wailord ex starts with the format’s staple Trainer cards. Professor’s Research, Cyrus, Copycat, and Poké Ball are simply too consistent to leave out.

They have defined the format for multiple expansions and continue to be the foundation of nearly every top tier deck. Unless future sets introduce even stronger alternatives, these staples should always be your starting point.

For Water specific support, Misty and Irida are your best options. Misty helps accelerate your setup by providing additional Water Energy, while Irida keeps Wailord ex healthy throughout the game, fitting perfectly into the deck’s defensive game plan.

The healing package is what truly makes the deck shine. Lucky Ice Pop, Pokémon Center Lady, and Soothing Shore allow Wailord ex to recover massive amounts of HP every turn.

Soothing Shore deserves a special mention because it completely offsets the damage from Rocky Helmet your opponent still takes the retaliation damage, while Wailord ex immediately heals the 20 damage after attacking, effectively negating the Tool’s effect.

When it comes to Pokémon Tools, Heavy Helmet is usually the best choice, reducing incoming damage by 20 and making Wailord ex even harder to Knock Out.

If you prefer a more aggressive approach, Rocky Helmet is a solid alternative, adding passive chip damage while also giving the deck an effective way to pressure Oricorio.

Finally, a few flexible Trainer cards can be included depending on your preferred playstyle. Sabrina, Mars, and Red Card are excellent disruption options that can slow down your opponent during the early turns, buying valuable time to complete your setup.

Meanwhile, X Speed is a useful tech card for games where you open with Indeedee ex, allowing you to retreat it for free and bring Wailmer into the Active Spot without wasting Energy.
