Best Cards to Chase

mage pokemon art gold pokemon pocket

With so many returning cards in Deluxe Pack MEGA, picking out the best ones isn’t simply a matter of looking at rarity. Some are worth chasing because they’re still powerful competitive cards, while others stand out because of their new artwork or their value to collectors.

Rather than splitting them into different categories, I’ve picked out the cards I think are most worth chasing and explained why each one stands out. Some might be useful in your decks, some might be great additions to your collection, and some might simply be cards I’d love to pull myself.

Let’s take a look at the cards I’d be most excited to find in B4b.

Cool New Art

Let’s start with some of the cards getting a brand-new Full Art in Deluxe Pack MEGA.

Miraidon ex and Koraidon ex are the crown rares of the set. We all expected Lucky Ice Pop to get the gold treatment, but instead we got these two… seriously, what goes through the developers’ heads when they pick Crown Rares? Do they just roll a D20 and go with whatever comes up?

Between the two, Miraidon ex is definitely the more widely played, appearing in plenty of Lightning type decks alongside Magnezone. Koraidon ex has also found competitive success, usually paired with Great Tusk.

But they’re not the only playable cards getting a new look.

Charmeleon and Mega Charizard X ex are both super cool, while Fidough finally gives the ever popular Puppy Pile archetype a Full Art to chase.
Baxcalibur is another notable addition, thanks to its role in accelerating Water decks.

We also have Meloetta, which has seen play in Psychic decks such as Mega Gardevoir ex and Mega Diancie ex, and Eevee’s Boosted Evolution, a popular choice in Eeveelution decks built around Jolteon ex and Vaporeon ex.

Competitive Cards Worth Recovering

Not every card worth chasing in Deluxe Pack MEGA comes with a shiny new Full Art. Some of these cards are simply very good competitive options that are worth having in your collection, especially if you’re missing them. For F2P players in particular, B4b is a great opportunity to pick up these staples now, so you don’t have to spend precious resources going back to older expansions when you eventually want to build a new deck.

Teal Mask Ogerpon ex is an absolute powerhouse versus Sleep decks, which are still running rampant in the meta and continue to make players want to throw their phones out the window.

Milotic ex and Mega Sharpedo ex are both great options for accelerating Water decks, while Chingling remains a strong Baby Pokémon that can slow your opponent down.

For Darkness decks, there are several cards worth picking up: Mega Absol ex, Hoopa ex, Zoroark ex, Mega Sableye ex, and Bombirdier are all heavily played and among the stronger options in the current meta.

Finally, Dragonair is a very useful card to have if you like Dragon type decks, making it another one I’d be happy to recover from B4b if I didn’t already have it.

Trainer Cards Worth Getting Your Paws On

Trainer cards are another big reason to pay attention to Deluxe Pack MEGA, especially if you’re a newer or F2P player trying to build up a useful collection.

Lucky Ice Pop, Field Blower, Lucky Egg, Mesagoza, Rainbow Cave, Hiking Trail, Lisia, and May are all fairly generic cards that can fit into a wide variety of decks and strategies. They’re the kind of cards that are always useful to have sitting in your collection, so having one or two copies of each can save you a lot of trouble when building future decks.

And then there’s Copycat.

Come on, you already know. Don’t pretend you don’t. She’s the QUEEN of this set. The whole thing practically revolves around her. If Copycat wasn’t here, would Deluxe Pack MEGA even have the same appeal?

She’s easily the most important cards to recover from B4b, but I’m still not completely sold on the new artwork. Personally, I expected much more. Make it Gold, make it Rainbow, invent an entirely new rarity if you have to, just do something!

This is the card you’re using to sell me the set, and you give her an artwork that feels pretty close to the one we already had? WHY?

What do you think? Do you like the new Copycat, or were you also expecting something much more special for the star of the set?

Archetype Specific Trainer Cards

Then we have a second group of Trainers that are more specialized. Electric Generator, Quick Grow Extract, Flame Patch, Deceptive Needle, Korrina, Clemont, Serena, Fragrant Forest, Arena of Antiquity, Soothing Shore, and Peculiar Plaza are tied more closely to specific types or strategies, but that doesn’t make them any less important.

These cards are often the foundation of entire archetypes, so having them ready in your collection can make it much easier to build those decks when you have the Pokémon to go with them.

And there’s one more reason I wouldn’t overlook them.

As we discussed in my article about the new dual-type Pokémon coming to Pokémon TCG Pocket, these type-specific cards could become much more valuable in the future. New Pokémon that combine different types may be able to take advantage of support cards that were previously limited to a single archetype.

So even if you don’t have an immediate use for some of these Trainers, they’re the kind of cards I’d rather have sitting in my collection than discover I need them after the next batch of Pokémon arrives.
